CARNAVAL DE ORURO, BOLIVIA: INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF HUMANITY
|
The colourful carnival in Oruro is more than 2000 years old and you can certainly tell. It is totally different from all the other places in South America as it proudly
celebrates its pre-Christian origins. But be warned: this celebration
involves A LOT of water fights (mainly from children) on the streets before and during the festivities! Prepare to get targeted! The Oruro carnival
pays homage to the city’s patron saint ‘Virgen del Socavón’ (The virgin of the mineshaft). The Oruro Diablada (devil dance) is danced in her honour and involves
performers dressing up in highly decorated and colourful devil costumes and parading through the town. The four kilometres parade is basically a pilgrimage that ends up at the virgin's shrine. For more information, please

CARNIVAL IN SALVADOR, BRAZIL: THE WORLD'S BIGGEST STREET PARTY
|
Brazil is home to some of the most eclectic carnival parties in the world. Unlike Rio where the main parades are held in closed arenas,
Salvador’s parades move along the city’s streets on different circuits! The
Campo Grande Circuit is the carnival’s oldest and covers the city centre. It takes 7 hours and ends at Salvador's main square. The
Barra-Ondina Circuit is a more recent creation along the city’s glitzy beachfront. The third Circuit takes place in the city’s beautiful colonial district,
Pelourinho! Here it's all about brass and drums and it's a lot more chilled than the other two circuits, so much so in fact that the best way to take it all in is to grab a table at one of the bars along the route and watch the parades happen just metres from your ice cold caipirinha.
